The Myers Law Firm spent last weekend riding on a toy soldier float in the Oakland Tribune Holiday Parade in honor of the East Bay Habitat for Humanity. Like all such holiday activites, it was a lot more fun than any of us anticipated, especially those who have never done the parade thing before.
Never having been a politician, there's nothing so affirming as having 10,000 complete strangers wave and smile at you. And all you need to do is wave and smile back.
Our honorees were the volunteers and staff at Habitat for Humanity East Bay. It is the first of a few projects we intend to develop to support this worthy charity, which provides affordable housing to low-income families in the East Bay. Their next year will involve an ambitious “extreme”-style project in East Oakland whereby Pulte Homes, KB Homes, and others will attempt to build two or three homes in a single week in June. This project needs help from a lot of different sources to be successful.
Johann, our 3 year-old, donned his construction helmet and overalls, and found his spot on the front of the float, riding a giant Christmas present. My wife Eileen, Trevor’s wife Ariel, and Malissa also rode the front of the float, with Janice Jensen, Executive Director for Habitat, rode with Peter on the back. The uniforms were Habitat’s white helmets and screened long-sleeve t-shirts. Stay tuned for further projects.
